Review:
Even though the author doesn't explicitly state that what's written in the book is coming from her personal experience, one can safely assume that this book pretty much describes Guyon's spiritual journey. So, in order to fully understand the context of the book, the reader needs to take a look at Guyon's personal life (Wikipedia's link is here).

Guyon's writings are somewhat controversial. They were considered as heresy by the Roman Catholic Church and Guyon was imprisoned for her publications. But, her teachings found popularity among the Protestants and even considered as classics. Hence, one needs to have an open mind in order to get the most from reading this book.

The book itself tells about christian spiritual journey starting from the repentance to the fully union with God. One will alternates between the times of dryness and times of the presence of God. God allows all of these happening so that He can purify the believer.

In overall, this book gives many insights regarding God - believer spiritual relationship. Guyon's assertions give the reader alternative point of views regarding of how to give meaning to the ups and downs of spiritual journey, what to expect in the dry periods, the features of union with God condition, etc. However, even though this is the re-written version from its original form, the language used is still somewhat difficult to understand. And the lack of supports and evidences makes the content cannot be used for general/all conditions. Well, it is true for Guyon's spiritual journey; but it might be very different for someone else's spiritual journey.
